The Bangye-ri Ginkgo Tree, designated as Korea’s National Monument No. 167, is estimated to be around 800 years old.
It stands 32 meters tall, has a trunk circumference of 16.27 meters, and its branches spread out in all directions, creating a magnificent appearance.
Legend has it that this tree was planted by one of the ancestors of the Seongju Yi clan. Another legend says that a passing Buddhist monk drank water from the tree, then stuck his cane in it, and the tree grew from it. It is also said that a white snake lives within the tree, allowing it to grow unharmed. Therefore, the tree is considered sacred. It was believed that a simultaneous autumn leaf change in the fall would bring a bountiful harvest. The tree continues to thrive, with its trunk and branches spread out in a balanced manner.
