Cheonggyecheon Stream, an approximately 11km-long urban stream that runs through downtown Seoul, has been a central feature of the city since the Joseon Dynasty.
During rapid urbanization and economic development following the Japanese colonial period and the Korean War, most of the stream was covered with concrete and an elevated highway was built over it. However, from 2003 to 2005, the Seoul Metropolitan Government conducted a large-scale restoration project, restoring the stream to its pristine natural state. Today, it is a popular urban natural space and cultural attraction for citizens and tourists alike.
Among the restored streams are walking trails, 22 bridges, Cheonggye Plaza, and the Cheonggyecheon Museum, offering a glimpse into the stream’s history and evolution. Beautifully illuminated at night, it becomes another Seoul tourist attraction. It is a symbolic example of urban regeneration, transforming a former symbol of industrialization and modernization into a space of nature and relaxation.
