치악산 국립공원
Chiaksan National Park, located in Wonju, Gangwon Province, is one of Korea’s most representative mountainous national parks. It boasts magnificent mountains, valleys, waterfalls, temples, and a diverse natural ecosystem. Designated a national park in 1984, it stands at 1,288 meters above sea level and covers a total area of approximately 182 square kilometers.
Key Features
* Several peaks over 1,000 meters high continue, including Birobong (1,288 meters), Namdaebong, Cheonjibong, Hyangrobong, and Sambong. The 14km mountain ridge trail is a prime example.
* Key attractions: Guryongsa Temple (temple), Geumdae Valley, Seryeom Falls, Taejongdae Rock, and other diverse attractions and trekking spots. Its beauty is captivating in all four seasons: azaleas in spring, lush forests in summer, autumn foliage, and snowy winter scenery.
* Both the ridge and valley trails are challenging, with the Seryeom Falls to Birobong section particularly renowned for its steep slopes, stairs, rock walls, and ropes. The average round trip takes 4-5 hours and requires considerable stamina, but the summit offers breathtaking views and stunning scenery.
*821 plant species, 2,364 animal species, and endangered species such as flying squirrels and bats live here.
Recommended Activities and Tips
*Birobong round-trip hike, Guryongsa Temple~Seryum Falls~Birobong~Sambong trekking course are popular.
*Valley picnic, waterfalls, rock formations, and scenic views, photography of seasonal wildflowers, autumn foliage, and snowscapes.
*The hike is challenging, so prepare hiking boots, plenty of water, and snacks. Be prepared for insects and extreme heat in the summer.
*At the summit, there are attractions such as a Buddhist altar, an observation deck, and a large stone pagoda.
