Daewonsa Temple in Sancheong, Jirisan County, Gyeongsangnam-do, is a historic Buddhist temple located on the eastern slopes of Jirisan Mountain. It was founded by Monk Yeongi in 548 (the fifth year of King Jinheung’s reign) of the Silla Dynasty.
It has been repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt due to fires and wars. It suffered significant damage during the Imjin War, the Japanese colonial period, the 1914 fire, the 1948 Yeosu-Suncheon Rebellion, and the Korean War.

It was rebuilt in 1955 by Buddhist nun Beopil and others, achieving its current appearance.

Daewonsa Temple is located amidst the beautiful natural scenery of the eastern slopes of Jirisan Mountain. It is renowned for its approximately 2km-long Daewonsa Valley Trail and its clear waters.
The trail, surrounded by towering, rocky cliffs, extends from the temple entrance and is ideal for walking and meditation.
The valley is also home to legends such as the dragon legend at Yongso Pond and the legend of the last king of Garak Kingdom in Somak Valley.

The temple is famous for its Buddhist nuns (a temple for female monks). The multi-story stone pagoda of Daewonsa Temple enshrines relics brought from China by Monk Jajang, along with the Buddha’s true body relics.
The approximately 2km-long Daewonsa Valley stretches to the temple. The pine trees, bizarre rock formations, and clear stream waters create a picturesque scene. It’s also a popular hiking and trekking destination.
The scenery is beautiful throughout the four seasons: cherry blossoms in spring, summer retreats, fall foliage, and snowy winters.
