길상사
Gilsangsa Temple, a relatively new temple located in Seongbuk-dong, Seongbuk-gu, Seoul, is a Jogye Order temple established in 1997 (or 1995) with a large donation from Kim Yeong-han (also known as Kim Yeong-hwa), a former gisaeng (female entertainer).
History and Characteristics
*It was built on the site of the former upscale restaurant “Daewongak.” Its owner, Kim Yeong-han, donated both the land and the building to Venerable Beopjeong (1932–2010), a leading Zen Buddhist monk, and the temple was converted into a temple.
*Venerable Beopjeong was widely respected for his “non-possession” (non-residence) practice, and his photos and personal belongings can be viewed at Jinyeonggak.
*The temple offers various Zen meditation spaces, including the “Gilsang Seonwon” and the “House of Silence,” as well as cultural experiences open to the public, including meditation programs, teahouse and Buddhist culture classes, and temple stay programs.
*The park features a seven-story stone pagoda, main hall, walking paths, a café, and other auxiliary facilities, allowing visitors to enjoy both nature and the ambiance of spiritual practice while taking a quiet stroll in the heart of the city.
*Official websites in Korean and English, program information, and detailed visitor information available.
This park offers a place to experience nature and tranquility in the heart of the city, meditate and experience Buddhist culture, and experience the monk Beopjeong’s spirit of non-possession. It’s highly recommended for those seeking to experience Korean Buddhism and stroll through the heart of Seoul.
