History and Features
*Haedong Yonggungsa Temple was founded in 1376 by Monk Naong after receiving a revelation from the Dragon King of the East Sea in a dream. Originally named Bomunsa Temple, it was destroyed during the Japanese invasions of 1592. It was rebuilt in the 1930s by monks from Tongdosa Temple, and renamed “Haedong Yonggungsa Temple” in 1974 by Monk Jeongam.
*The expansive grounds feature a large sea-facing statue of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, a pagoda, and temple buildings arranged along the cliffs and rocks. The temple’s unique structures, including numerous Buddhist statues, prayer areas, statues of the twelve zodiac animals, and four lions (representing joy, anger, sorrow, and pleasure), are particularly impressive.
*Many people visit to see the sunrise on New Year’s Day and pray for the fulfillment of their wishes. Every year on Buddha’s Birthday, the temple grounds are adorned with a spectacular display of lanterns.
Haedong Yonggungsa Temple, nestled serenely on a seaside cliff, is renowned among tourists visiting Busan as “Korea’s Best Coastal Temple.” Its deep-rooted belief in the power of prayer to grant wishes also attracts many visitors.
