Haenyeo (female divers) are Jeju Island’s female divers who survive by harvesting shellfish, seaweed, and other marine products from the ocean.
The Haenyeo Museum showcases the lives, workshops, and overall culture of Jeju’s haenyeo (female divers) through a variety of exhibits in a pleasant three-story space. The museum also displays vivid materials donated by the haenyeo themselves and works by ocean-loving organizations.
The museum features a replica of a traditional haenyeo (female diver)’s home, along with exhibits on various themes such as haenyeo work tools and attire, haenyeo lifestyle, history, and traditional rituals. The third-floor observatory offers a chance to observe haenyeo at work and their workshops. The Haenyeo Museum opened in 2006,
and is generally open from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
The value of Jeju’s haenyeo culture was recognized in 2016 when it was designated a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
