이화 벽화 마을
Ihwa Mural Village is a representative mural village located in Ihwa-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul. As part of the “Naksan Project” launched by the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 2006, approximately 70 artists and volunteers created murals and installations throughout the village.
History and Background
*Ihwa-dong was once a so-called “moon village,” where refugees built temporary homes on the hillside after the Korean War in the 1950s.
*In 2006, through the “Naksan Project,” promoted by the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, approximately 70 artists, university students, and volunteers began installing murals and sculptures throughout the village, marking the beginning of a revitalization project.
*Initially, some murals were damaged due to disagreements between local residents and tourists. However, through resident participation and education on proper etiquette for tourists, Ihwa Mural Village has become one of Seoul’s most iconic mural villages.
Features and Attractions
*Narrow alleys, staircases, and walls are filled with colorful murals and installations, making it a popular walking and photo opportunity.
*The village’s summit offers breathtaking views of downtown Seoul and Namsan Seoul Tower, making it a popular spot for viewing.
*The surrounding area features small cafes, galleries, and music venues, making for a relaxing stroll and cultural experience.
Ewha Mural Village is a prime example of Seoul’s urban regeneration and a unique cultural attraction that blends art, history, and landscape, beloved by both locals and visitors.
