Jeonju Gyeonggijeon Shrine, located in Wansan-gu, Jeonju, North Jeolla Province, is a historic shrine built to house portraits of the early Joseon Dynasty kings.
Constructed in 1410 (the 10th year of King Taejong’s reign), it enshrines a portrait of King Taejo, founder of the Joseon Dynasty.
Historical Significance
*Gyeonggijeon Shrine, named after the celebration of the founding of the Joseon Dynasty, symbolizes the foundation of the dynasty by enshrining a portrait of King Taejo.
*It is the official portrait shrine of the Joseon royal family and, of the five shrines enshrining portraits of King Taejo across the country, is the only one that remains in its original form.
*Located in Jeonju, the ancestral home of the Jeonju Yi clan, it holds significant regional and historical significance.
Architecture and Structure
*Gyeonggijeon Shrine is a simple structure with an inner gate and an outer gate. Originally, a larger shrine existed nearby, but portions were demolished during the Japanese colonial period. *Currently, it operates as a pavilion displaying portraits of various Joseon kings and queens, including the portrait of King Taejo Yi Seong-gye (National Treasure No. 317).
*Ancillary buildings include the Jogyeongmyo Shrine (the shrine of Lee Dong-rim, the founder of the Jeonju Yi clan), the Yejong Taesil (the ancestral chamber of King Yejong, a descendant of King Taejo), and the Royal Portrait Exhibition Hall.
Location and Tourist Information
*Gyeonggijeon Shrine is located right in front of the Jeonju Hanok Village, making it a popular attraction for tourists visiting the Hanok Village.
*Nearby are many tourist attractions where traditional and modern culture coexist, including Pungnammun Gate, Jeonju Hyanggyo Confucian School, and Jeondong Cathedral, making it a must-see for any Jeonju traveler.
*Various cultural events and nighttime programs are also held, with the reenactment of the Taejo portrait procession particularly popular.
*Renting a hanbok and taking a photo will transport you back in time, capturing the beauty of the evening.
