명륜당
Myeongnyundang (Myeongnyundang), a historic lecture hall from the Joseon Dynasty within Sungkyunkwan University, is located on Seonggyungwan-ro in Jongno-gu, Seoul. It was formerly used for Confucian education and lectures.
Built in 1398, it served as the central lecture hall of Sungkyunkwan during the Joseon Dynasty. Confucian lectures for the royal family and the nation, as well as national examinations, were held here.
Myeongnyundang served as a lecture hall for students during the Joseon Dynasty. In front of it stand two ginkgo trees, over 500 years old, designated Natural Monument No. 59.
This was a center of scholarship and education during the Joseon Dynasty and is now preserved as a representative cultural heritage site of Seoul.
Myeongnyundang is a familiar sight, appearing on the 1,000 won note.
Opening hours are 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM from March to October, and until 5:00 PM from November to February. Admission is free. It’s about a 10-minute walk from Exit 4 of Hyehwa Station on Subway Line 4. Along with the nearby Sungkyunkwan, Munmyo, and Dongmyo Shrines, it’s a recommended cultural exploration destination. Currently preserved as a historical cultural asset, its architectural beauty and the autumn ginkgo leaves create a spectacular sight.
