Naganeupseong (Naganeupseong) is a late Joseon Dynasty fortress village located in Suncheon, South Jeolla Province. It was built in 1397 during the reign of King Taejo to protect against Japanese pirates.
This village, combining a fortress and residential areas, historically served as an administrative, military, and commercial center.
Naganeupseong is a historic village in Korea and a representative example of a Joseon Dynasty fortress (an administrative center surrounded by a fortress wall).
Within the village, approximately 231 thatched-roof houses and traditional Korean houses have been preserved in their original form, providing a vivid glimpse into the lifestyles of the common people of the Joseon Dynasty.
Visitors can walk along the fortress walls or explore the interiors of traditional houses, gaining a deeper understanding of Joseon-era village life.
Today, approximately 100 households still live here, continuing their traditional lifestyle, making it a truly “living museum.”
Included in the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List in 2010, it was designated a World Heritage Site in 2011.
