선교장
Gangneung Seongyojang (Korean: 성교장) is a traditional hanok (traditional Korean house) owned by a noble family from the Joseon Dynasty, located in Unjeong-dong, Gangneung, Gangwon Province. Designated National Folk Cultural Heritage No. 5, it boasts over 300 years of history.
Seongyojang is located near Gyeongpo Lake, and its name, “Seongyojang” (船橋莊), refers to the area where boats cross the house. This 99-room mansion preserves the architectural style of the late Joseon Dynasty, making it a prime example of traditional Korean housing. The house features a spacious main hall, an inner quarters, a separate building, and servants’ quarters, all meticulously arranged to create a harmonious atmosphere. The beautiful garden and pond are complemented by the Hwalraejeong Pavilion, built in 1816 and perched on the pond, a favorite spot for many visitors.
Surrounding Seongyojang are lush pine and bamboo forests, along with walking trails (Cheongryong-gil and Baekho-gil), offering a chance to not only admire the house but also enjoy a nature walk. Inside, traditional Korean cultural experience programs are offered, and this cultural heritage site offers a vivid glimpse into the lives of those of the past.
Operating hours are generally from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and free parking is available.
