Seoraksan Mountain, located in the northeastern part of Gangwon Province, is one of South Korea’s most famous mountains and the centerpiece of Seoraksan National Park. With Daecheongbong Peak, at 1,708 meters above sea level, it is the highest peak. Designated as Korea’s first UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1982, it boasts exceptional natural scenery and ecological value, making it a popular destination for both domestic and international tourists and hikers year-round. It is sometimes called the Yosemite of Korea.
Key Features and Attractions
*Daecheongbong Peak: At 1,708 meters above sea level, Seoraksan’s summit offers breathtaking sunrise and sunset views.
*Ulsanbawi Rock: This massive granite peak, comprised of six peaks, is renowned for its powerful winds, sheer cliffs, and potholes at its summit. *Dinosaur Ridge (Dinosaur Maru): Also known as “Dinosaur Ridge,” the peaks resemble dinosaurs in motion. Its name is apt for its breathtaking rocky landscapes and challenging hiking trails.
*Mangyeongdae: This 922.2m-high peak in front of Oseam offers stunning views, and features a variety of rock faces and ridges.
*Jujeongol: A beautiful valley with a variety of rock formations, waterfalls, and valleys.
*Gwongeumseong: Accessible by cable car, the observatory and beacon tower, as well as the nearby Anrakam Hermitage and an 800-year-old pine tree, offer breathtaking views even for non-hikers.
*Baekdamsa Temple, Sinheungsa Temple, and other temples: Nestled deep in the mountains, these temples offer a chance to experience Buddhism and its rich historical and cultural heritage.
Hiking and Tourism
*Fourteen trails of varying difficulty are available, offering a variety of experiences for beginners, families, and experienced hikers alike. *Major hiking trails include Seorakdong to Ulsanbawi, Osaek to Daecheongbong, Baekdamsa Temple to Daecheongbong, and Gwongeumseong (cable car).
*The national park boasts excellent tourist infrastructure, including various amenities and information centers, wheelchair-accessible restrooms, and public transportation (connected to Sokcho City).

*Hours: 6:00 AM – 6:00 PM daily (Seorakdong District), subject to change depending on season and course
*Children and families are welcome, and wheelchairs are available.
*Major photo spots: Ulsanbawi, Dinosaur Ridge, Daecheongbong, etc.
Fall foliage season in particular attracts the most hikers nationwide. The winter snowscapes, spring greenery, and summer valleys are also renowned.
Seoraksan Mountain is a highly recommended destination for both Koreans and international visitors, offering a blend of natural beauty, ecological diversity, and historical and cultural attractions. You can experience a variety of things, from serious mountain climbing to enjoying the view from a cable car, and exploring mountain temples and valleys.
