The Seosomun Shrine History Museum, located at 5 Chilpae-ro, Jung-gu, Seoul, was built on the site of a former execution ground outside Seosomun Gate during the Joseon Dynasty.
It primarily commemorates the persecution of Catholics and the martyrs of the late Joseon Dynasty, and is a historical site of the Donghak Peasant Revolution and the suppression of Catholicism.
The museum features a memorial tower honoring the martyrs, along with artifacts related to the execution grounds, records of Catholic persecution, and historical exhibits.
Furthermore, the museum offers a quiet contemplative space, such as the “Consolation Hall,” and a diverse collection of modern art pieces, offering a deeply moving experience for visitors.
Opening hours are Tuesday–Sunday and Thursday–Sunday, 9:30–17:30. Closed on Mondays, Lunar New Year’s Day, and Chuseok. Admission is free.
It is conveniently located about a five-minute walk from Exit 4 of Chungjeongno Station (Subway Lines 2 and 5). It is a cultural landmark in Seoul renowned for its architectural beauty and historical significance.
