Wolchulsan Mountain, located in Yeongam and Gangjin counties in South Jeolla Province, is one of the highest mountains in Korea, rising 809 meters above sea level. Meaning “Mountain where the moon rises,” Wolchulsan is a popular destination for hikers and tourists alike, thanks to its unique rock formations and stunning peaks.
Major attractions include the 809-meter-tall Cheonhwangbong Peak; the 120-meter-tall, 52-meter-long red suspension bridge, Cloud Bridge; Gujeolbong Peak (a cluster of nine urns), a collection of unusual rock formations; and the Muwisa Stone Buddha, a designated National Treasure. The hiking trail, which passes through Dogapsa Temple and Muwisa Temple, leads to the summit and takes approximately six hours. The diverse natural scenery is breathtaking in all four seasons, with the autumn foliage and winter snow-covered peaks particularly impressive.
